Gum Disease
As a part of your dental checkups we always check the health of your gums. Gum disease is a slow disease that affects the gums and bone that support your teeth. Some of the tell tale signs are bleeding on brushing, bad breath, bad taste and loose teeth. There are two types of gum disease:- Gingivitis- which is inflammation of the gums and bleeding on brushing, this is a reversible disease
- Periodontitis- If gingivitis is not treated it can spread below the gums and affect the bone supporting your teeth. The bone and gum eventually recede and your teeth become looser and looser until they fall out. Once you have it you need treatment and assistance from your hygienist.
Gum disease is caused by plaque which contains bacteria. If it is not removed it becomes hard and is known as tartar. The tartar causes inflammation and as it grows down the root surface this will eventually cause bone deterioration and tooth loss. The earlier it is diagnosed and detected the greater success rate, regular check ups help with this.
