Dental implants in Manchester: what to expect at Carisbrook Dental

Losing a tooth, or being told one needs to come out, is one of those moments that hits harder than most people expect. It's not just about the gap; it's about what comes next, and whether what comes next will actually feel like a real tooth. Dental implants in Manchester have become the treatment of choice for patients who want a permanent, natural-looking solution, and at Carisbrook Dental in Whitefield, we've been placing them for years with a level of surgical skill and planning that's genuinely rare outside of a hospital setting.

This post walks through what dental implants are, who they're right for, and what makes Carisbrook's approach different.

What is a dental implant, and how does it work?

A dental implant is a small titanium screw that is placed directly into the jawbone, where it acts as an artificial tooth root. Once the implant has fused with the bone (a process called osseointegration, which takes a few months), a custom-made crown is attached on top. The result looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth.

Unlike dentures, which sit on top of the gum and can slip or click, or bridges, which rely on grinding down neighbouring healthy teeth for support, an implant is completely self-contained. It doesn't affect any other teeth. It doesn't come out at night. And because it sits in the bone rather than on it, it helps to preserve the jawbone, which naturally starts to shrink once a tooth root is gone.

Who places dental implants at Carisbrook?

This matters more than most patients realise. Dental implant surgery is a surgical procedure, and the quality of the outcome depends significantly on the skill and experience of the clinician placing the implant.

At Carisbrook, implants are placed by two clinicians: Dr Tariq Idrees, our principal dentist who holds an MSc in dental implants, and Dr Patel, a GDC-registered consultant oral surgeon. Having a consultant oral surgeon in house is genuinely unusual for a high street dental practice; it means that complex cases, bone grafting procedures, and patients with more challenging anatomy can be treated here rather than being referred elsewhere.

We use implants from three of the most trusted systems in the world: Astra, Straumann, and MegaGen. These are systems chosen by teaching hospitals and specialist centres precisely because of their long-term clinical track record.

Planning your implant with precision

One of the things patients often mention after their consultation is how different it feels to get clear answers quickly. For a long time, patients who needed a CT scan to assess whether they were suitable for implants had to be referred to an external scanning centre, pay separately for it, and then wait two or three weeks for the results. By that point, the momentum of the decision had often gone.

Carisbrook has a Carestream CT scanner in house. That means your 3D scan, which shows the exact density and depth of your bone, the position of nerves, and the proximity of your sinus, can be done here and reviewed on the same day. In many cases, we can tell you at your first appointment whether implants are suitable for you.

Digital implant planning software then allows us to map exactly where each implant will be placed before surgery begins, reducing the risk of complications and improving accuracy.

What types of dental implant treatment do we offer?

We offer the full range of implant treatments, including:

  • Single tooth implants, to replace one missing tooth without touching the teeth on either side
  • Multiple tooth implants, where two or more teeth are missing in the same area
  • Implant-retained bridges, using two implants to support a bridge spanning a larger gap
  • Full arch implant solutions, for patients who have lost most or all of their teeth and want a fixed alternative to dentures
  • Bone grafting, where required, to rebuild sufficient bone volume before implant placement

We do not offer same-day full arch procedures (sometimes marketed as "teeth in a day", where all remaining teeth are extracted and an implant bridge is fitted on the same day). This is a deliberate choice. In the right hands it can work well, but it requires a very specific clinical scenario and carries more risk than a staged approach. We would rather take the time to do it properly than rush a result.

What if I'm nervous about surgery?

Implant surgery sounds more daunting than it usually is. Most patients are surprised by how straightforward it feels on the day; local anaesthetic means you won't feel pain during the procedure, and most people manage well with just that. But for patients who are anxious, or who have a strong gag reflex, or who simply want to be completely relaxed, we offer IV sedation.

IV sedation is administered intravenously and puts you in a deeply relaxed, semi-conscious state for the duration of the procedure. You won't be asleep in the way a general anaesthetic works, but you'll be comfortable, calm, and you won't remember much of the treatment afterwards. Dr Idrees and Dr Rhys both have formal qualifications in IV sedation; this isn't something offered as an add-on at Carisbrook, it's a properly managed clinical service.

Carisbrook has also been registered with Dental Phobia for over 15 years, which reflects a genuine and longstanding commitment to treating anxious patients with care and patience.

How much do dental implants cost, and can I spread the payments?

Implant costs vary depending on how many teeth are being replaced, whether bone grafting is needed, and which crown material is chosen. We provide all costs upfront before any treatment begins; there are no surprises. You'll receive a written treatment plan with a full breakdown.

Finance is available through Tabeo, with options including 0% finance over a defined term. A finance calculator is available on our website so you can get a sense of monthly costs before your consultation. For patients who join our practice membership plan, a 20% discount applies across treatments, along with worldwide dental insurance and trauma cover.

Your free implant consultation at Carisbrook

We offer a free initial consultation for dental implants. This is a 15-minute conversation with a clinician, not a coordinator, where you can ask questions, discuss which options are realistic for your situation, and get a sense of likely costs and timescales. There's no pressure and no commitment.

If you'd like to proceed from there, the next step is a full implant assessment, which includes a detailed examination, any necessary scans, and a bespoke written report. Carisbrook is based in Whitefield, with easy access from Bury, Prestwich, Radcliffe, Worsley, and across north Manchester. We have on-site parking for up to 12 cars.

Frequently asked questions about dental implants

How long do dental implants last?

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, dental implants can last 20 years or more, and many last a lifetime. The crown on top may need replacing after 10 to 15 years depending on wear, but the implant itself, once properly integrated with the bone, is highly durable.

Am I suitable for dental implants?

Most adults with good general health are suitable for implants. The key factors are sufficient bone volume in the jaw and healthy gums. Conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes or heavy smoking can affect healing and implant success, and this will be discussed honestly at your consultation. In cases where bone loss has occurred, grafting is often an option to rebuild the site before placement.

Is dental implant surgery painful?

During the procedure, local anaesthetic means you shouldn't feel pain, though you may be aware of pressure. Afterwards, most patients find the discomfort is manageable with standard over-the-counter painkillers and settles within a few days. For anxious patients, IV sedation means the whole experience is much less stressful.

How long does the whole process take?

From initial consultation to fitting the final crown, the process typically takes between three and six months. The longest part is the healing period after the implant is placed, while the titanium fuses with the bone. The surgical appointments themselves are usually straightforward and relatively short.

Do you offer implants for nervous patients?

Yes. IV sedation is available for all implant procedures at Carisbrook, carried out by clinicians with formal qualifications in sedation. If anxiety has been a barrier to getting dental treatment, this is worth discussing at your consultation.
