This new teeth whitening treatment is far better than the hydrogen peroxide currently used. That is the claim being made by scientists at the American Chemical Society, who report that titanium dioxide, combined with a natural glue called polydopamine, will provide an effective whitener – but without the enamel-damaging effects associated with hydrogen peroxide.Titanium dioxide is used the world over to whiten plastics, paper, paint, pills and toothpastes. It is also used in make-up to lighten the skin. Now, say the scientists, it could revolutionise teeth whitening treatment because in tests they found that the whitening effect was similar to that of hydrogen peroxide, and crucially no damage was seen on the teeth’s enamel.The other important factor in favour of titanium dioxide, they say, is that it is believed to be less toxic than hydrogen peroxide to living cells. This, they claim, makes people feel more comfortable about putting it into their mouth. There are even suggestions that it possesses antibacterial properties – so it could also help clean the teeth during the teeth whitening treatment.At the moment hydrogen peroxide is still the teeth whitening agent of choice. It is true, however, that if used unprofessionally or irresponsibly by unqualified people such as beauticians and other unlicensed users, then there can be serious risk to health, including burns to the mouth and damage to the teeth.That is why the law states only qualified and registered dental professionals are legally entitled to provide teeth whitening treatment.If it is provided by anyone else the teeth whitening treatment is not only illegal… it is potentially dangerous.Don’t risk it!If what the scientists claim about titanium dioxide is proven to be correct than it is very interesting.
