Gum Disease – don’t just ignore it

If you suffer from gum disease treatment is essential

Last week we wrote about how the early stages of gum disease can be extremely difficult to identify and we pointed out just some of the symptoms that everyone should watch out for. This week we’re providing professional dental advice on the steps you should take to prevent it and also the correct gum disease treatment that is required if you suspect that your gums may already be affected. As we mentioned last week, the early symptoms of gum disease include red, swollen and tender gums, plus bleeding from the gums as well as painful gums when you clean your teeth. If you have any of these symptoms it is vitally important that you make an appointment with your dentist to inform them and to let them check it out.Of course, preventative dentistry is always the best policy and that begins with thoroughly brushing your teeth twice a day – the first thing in the morning and again just before you go to bed at night. The reason is that without regular brushing plaque can quickly build up around your teeth and gums. In the early stages this can easily be brushed off, but if you leave it then after just a few days the plaque hardens into tartar that cannot be brushed away. Tartar will damage your teeth and gums and the only way that this hard substance can be removed is for your Manchester Dentist to do it.In other words it is imperative that you arrange regular appointments to see your Orthodontist or dental hygienist so that they can spot the early stages of the problem and can then provide the correct gum disease treatment. For more serious gum disease problems such as damaged gum tissue or even degeneration of the bone, these symptoms are more difficult to deal with but with regular gum disease treatment, it is possible to manage and control it.There are other instances too where you should, without question, always advise your dentist or dental hygienist. These include:

  • If you are diabetic there is a higher risk of gum disease
  • If you suffer regular bleeding gums
  • If there is a family history of gum disease
  • If you are a smoker you also have 50 percent more chance of developing gum disease symptoms and requiring gum disease treatment. So once again if any of the above apply to you to inform your dentist or dental hygienist without delay.

Having said all this, the best dental hygiene advice to help you avoid the risks of gum disease and having to undergo gum disease treatment is not to neglect your dental health, ensure you undertake thorough brushing twice a day and visit your dentist regularly so that they can keep an eye on the condition of your teeth and gums. If gum disease treatment is required it can be spotted early on before the problem becomes a serious issue. If you would like us to check your teeth and gums then please book an appointment now.
