A caring approach

As no replacement is as good as your natural teeth, we try our hardest to maintain and strengthen what we have before considering the removal of a tooth. However, sometimes this isn’t possible and a tooth cannot be saved and will need to be removed. Some of the causes can include tooth decay, infection and gum disease.

What are your tooth replacement options?

As well as ensuring you are fully informed of what is involved in the process, your dentist will discuss the options available to replace missing teeth prior to a tooth extraction. Treatments including dentures, bridges or implants may be suitable, all achieve natural-looking results.Your dentist will take the time to fully explain the treatments they feel would be most suitable for you, answering your questions so that you are able to make an informed decision.

Frequently asked questions about tooth extracton

What is the difference between a simple and a surgical tooth extraction?

A simple extraction is the most common type of extraction. This involves simply loosening and removing the tooth from its socket. A surgical extraction is carried out when a simple extraction is not possible. THis may be due to the tooth being severely broken, impacted or for other reasons. A surgical extraction is a more complex procedure which involves an incision into your gum, removal of the bone and sutures to complete the procedure.

How long is the healing process after a tooth extraction?

Healing after both types of extraction is generally straightforward and most patients experience no problems at all. We provide a post-operative care pack to you after the appointment and we recommend you follow our instructions to heal the wound and make a speedy recovery.

Will the tooth extraction hurt?

We aim to ensure our patients are as comfortable as possible throughout a dental extraction, administering a local anaesthetic to numb the area. We will always ensure you are fully numb and will not proceed with any treatment until you are happy for us to. We keep our patients updated about what we are doing throughout the procedure and you can stop us at any point for a break.
