Wishing you a Happy New Year from Carisbrook Dental

Detox your teeth

At the beginning of every year it’s not uncommon for people to resolve to improve their fitness, their health, lose weight and to detox their bodies after the festive excesses. But don’t forget that as part of your overall New Year’s Health Resolution you shouldn’t forget your mouth and teeth. Remember, you’re always welcome to call into Carisbrook Dental, the major dentist Manchester practice, and speak to one of our hygienists about the best oral hygiene techniques. But in the meantime, here are our five top New Year Tips to improve the health and appearance of your teeth and your smile.

  1. Change your toothbrush

When did you last change your toothbrush? Most people continue to use the same one for far too long and we recommend you should change yours at least every three months. Choose a good make and select a medium bristle brush. Clean your teeth using a small circular brushing motion - known as the BASS technique. If you’re not sure about how to do this, why not contact us and ask one of our hygienists to demonstrate the most effective way to brush your teeth?

  1. Use a good fluoride toothpaste

Choose a good recognized brand and check that it contains fluoride amongst its ingredients. When you have cleaned your teeth don’t rinse your mouth but leave the fluoride there to help strengthen and protect your teeth.

  1. Floss your teeth

Brushing alone cleans only about 60% of the surface area of your teeth, which means that 40% (nearly half) never gets cleaned. That is why it is so important to clean between the teeth using a good floss or inter-dental brush. You can learn more about cleaning techniques by watching the videos on our Cleaning Advice page, or you can visit one of our hygienists who will show you the best way to do it.

  1. Don’t miss your annual or 6-monthly check-up

It’s always tempting to ignore the check-up, especially if you’re not experiencing any problems. But that is a big mistake because your dentist can spot minor problems and rectify them quickly and simply before they develop into major concerns.Your dentist can also identify any early symptoms of mouth cancer and can act before the problem becomes a major health issue. Mouth cancer is very rare, but it can be very severe and require major invasive surgery. The earlier it is spotted the better it is.So keep that appointment!

At Carisbrook we will help you achieve a lovely smile. Did you know that you use more muscles to scowl than you do to smile? Also that a smile releases ‘happy hormones’, so do make sure you have a nice smile and not only will it boost your own confidence, but you’ll also help to turn the world into a happier and more pleasant place.Visit our Smile Gallery or contact us to ensure that 2015 really is a Happy New Year!
